Description copied from front page: The following pages from Edward Kintner’s grade records at Manchester College were made in the back of a small notebook which he had previously used to record the decisions of the special committee (of which he served as secretary) to plan the details of the Annual Conference of the Church of the Brethren in 1903, held at Bellefontaine, Ohio. The notebook is filed at the Brethren Historical Archives at Elgin, Illinois. File containing clippings from newspapers and publications, along with one receipt. Materials include: Kinter family with wife and 7 children. Announcement of Edward Kinter’s retirement from the Manchester College Bulletin. Kinter honored by the Manchester College faculty. Banquet held in the Kinters’ honor. Celebration of Edward & Glada Kinters’ 65th wedding anniversary. 1946 receipt for Kinter’s License to preach. Biographical sketch, “Always the Teacher.” Manchester Scholarship created in Edward Kintner’s Honor. Announcement of Kinter’s admittance to Manchester from the “Manchester College Standard,” March 1900, p. 11. “Bro Edwards Kinter, a young minister from New, Ohio, has come amongst us. He is taking a couple of studies in Bible work.”
| | Date of Accession | Unknown | | Bio History Note | The Holl-Kintner Hall of Science is named in the honor of Professors Holl and Kintner. This building was remodeled into the Academic Center. Pictures of Kintner and Holl are in the lobby. Kintner died on April 1, 1975. More information: Kintner was an instructor at Manchester College from 1910 –
1951. He taught the subjects of History, Mathematics, Chemistry,
Biology, Agriculture, Science, Physics. He was also a Church of the Brethren minister, and wore the
garb. The following is copied from Bill Eberly’s book, “The
Story of the Natural Sciences at Manchester College.” Many references to Kintner are in this publication.
Page 26 “Even Edward Kintner taught mathematics (and history) in
1910-1911, his first teaching assignment at Manchester College. Kintner was
actually in school at Manchester during 1909-1910. The Aurora for
1910 does not show him as a teacher, though he may have taught some.
Kintner was enrolled as a liberal arts student (college student) and in the
Bible School. His only picture was a member of the Bible Society.
In 1911 Kintner is pictured among the teachers.” Bill Eberly, pg. 26. Bill Eberly also writes, pg. 57 – “Prof Kintner was widely known across the state of Indiana. His students were succeeding quite well in graduate and professional schools. It was a badge of honor for a young student to be know as “one of Kintner’s boys” (or “girls”). Always an active participant in the Indiana Academy of Science, Kintner served as vice president in 1936. In 1932 he was elected to be a “Fellow” in the Academy. The Secretary of the Academy, Dr. Ray C. Friesner, wrote to Dr. Kintner, It gives me great pleasure to inform you in behalf of the Indiana Academy of Science that you were elected to the rank of ‘Fellow’ in the Academy. This is a distinct honor and is a recognition to science and your service to the Academy. Please accept my personal congratulations and permit me to hope that you will continue the good work. While several members of the Manchester science faulty are members of the Academy, Prof. Kintner was the first to be elected to the rank of Fellow. When the Academy held its Annual meeting on the campus of Manchester College on November 4-6, 1937, Kintner was chairman of the Program Committee. Kintner was also named to the American Men of Science and Indiana Scientists.” From the archivist: Kinter is pictured as a 1912
graduate of MC in the 1912 Aurora. At that time, however, it was not uncommon
for a talented student to also teach while finishing up a degree. Kintner's senior description in the Aurora cites that he was an instructor in
Science in the Academy (Manchester’s preparatory school). It also
says that he is an “amateur photographer.”* *Note that the North Manchester Historical Society hold the Kintner photograph collection. J. Wine 11 March 2021
