DVDs containing .WAV files are located in the box containing the CDs (bottom shelf of the Media Shelves (IIS). The .WAV files on the DVDs  are similar to RAW files and they can be used to copy and to clean-up later, but we do not use these originals (.WAV files) for general listening.

Cassette #1a – [digital archives] -  L. W. Shultz - February 29, 1936, Kagawa, the great Japanese Christian,  gave a series of Leap Year lectures.   Shultz took charge of the program and ran it. "The Paradoxes of Jesus" was one of the topics. He spoke at Muncie Church of the Brethren on 1 March 1936, "The Meaning of the Cross." Shultz describes the experience.

Shultz recounts some of the hardest times the institution went through and how the school resolved the problems.

The Academy, the high school, was quite strong.  Largest High School in the county outside of Wabash.

Cassette #1b - [digital archives - CD available] - Max Allen (Professor of Art 1939-1978) and wife, Sally Allen (Professor of Art 1930-1939).  Max came to MC as a student in Fall of 1930 and as a teacher in the Fall of 1939, in the meantime, he graduated and taught public school for 2 years, and married Sarah Mertz, who was the professor in the Art Dpt. at M.C.  Sarah insisted Max attend The Art Institute of Chicago, which Sarah stayed here in N. Manchester to teach and support.

After WWII, 3 distinct groups - markedly differently kind of performance when primarily all women on campus. I was senior class sponsor and got in on one of the conflicts.

Cassette #2a – [digital archives - CD available] - Max Allen's Centennial Interview is continued September 1987 by Timothy K. Jones - Max Allen and wife, Sally Allen (Sarah Mertz). Mrs. Andrew Cordier taught art to Sally Allen.

Cassette #3a,b – [digital archives - CD available]  Centennial Interview, 9 September 1988, Ronald Arnett, Alumnus 1974, Dean of Academic Affairs (1987-?) and instructor of Speech Communications.

Cassette #4a,b –  [digital archives - CD available] - Dr. Ladoska Z. Bunker's* Centennial Interview by Timothy Jones, July 1987.

*Dr. L. Z. Bunker (MC alumna 1922) was a pre-med student at Manchester and then went to IU to finish. At the time, Manchester College had a higher rate of entrance to medical school than Indiana University. She attributes that to Professor Kintner who was in charge at the time and made an effort to help students. She talks a great deal about Professor Kintner’s teaching.

Cassette #5a,b – [digital archives - CD available] - Eldon Burke (Alumnus 1922, Professor of History/Political Science 1953-1969). “Centennial Interview of Eldon Burke by Timothy Jones,” on 2 September 1987. Eldon talks about L. D. Ikenberry through the eyes of Wilbur Dunbar, L. D. Ikenberry's grandson.

Cassette #6a,b – [digital archives- CD available] - Al Deeter (Alumnus 1953, Professor of Religion/Philosophy, 1959-1999) is interviewed by Tim Jones in May of 1989.  Topics include the development of the Peace Studies program and Brethren Colleges Abroad (BCA). Deeter talks of Manchester's interest in international politics and political involvement.  Schutz and Cordier influenced young people to work in careers oriented towards peace concerns (Keim and L. W. Shultz are also mentioned as is Brethren Service). He talks about the history of the Peace Corps and relationship with President Kennedy's speech writer and the Church of the Brethren.

Cassette #7a,b – [digital archives -CD available] - Reflections of Ora DeLauter (Alumnus 1914). He refers to the Snell family reunion and Grandpa Snell, who was a minister in the Church of the Brethren. This appears to be a group event and others ask questions and share their recollections. It also appears as if the cassette tape was used previously and following Ora's presentation - we find a speech by a businessman who makes a presentation "service is the heart of my business"  and thoughts on marketing and business.

Transcript of Gletha Mae Fisher interview  - in box containing "Centennial Interview" CDs.

***Gletha was a Brethren minister’s daughter and was expected to go to Manchester College. She started in 1926 and stayed after graduation as a faculty member. She was a member of one of the Literary Societies and remembers giving impromptu speeches over random topics after the programs. There were also dining hall experiences where they were assigned tables by a host and hostess and had to discuss assigned topics. This was supposed to help those who were quiet and timid learn to talk about different topics.

Cassette #19 - Robert Frantz (Business Office 1966-?). Bob Frantz interview conducted by female interviewer on 15 August 1988.

Cassette #20 - Florence Freed  (Alumna 1928) "Centennial Interview," 8 July 1988 interview by Tim Jones.

Cassette #21 - Velma Frey (Faculty 1963-?).  Velma Frey "Centennial Interview," 23 June 1988. The interview is made by an unidentified female interviewer.

Cassette #22 - Part 1 - Paul Keller (Alumnus 1935, Professor of Communications 1948-1982), Lewis Deardorff (Alumnus 1936), Robert Beery (Trustee1953-63, 1972-81, 1982; Alumnus 1936). “Centennial History Interview 6-11-87," by Tim Jones.

***Manchester used to have four Literary Societies, two for men and two for women, that were similarto fraternities and sororities. They were supposed to be a social and academic experience for students. They occurred on Friday nights when students were stuck on campus for the weekend and consisted of speeches, music, and other performances. An officer would act as a critic and appraise the performance afterward. These were generally rather light-hearted, fun times for those students who couldn’t leave campus during the weekend.

*** While at school, Lewis was hired to drive President Otho Winger during the summer.President Winger had been told by his doctor that he needed more rest, so he decided to hire someone to drive him to all of his meetings and commencement addresses at various high schools. Lewis lived in the dorms, ate with President Winger and his wife when he couldn’t go to the dining hall, and helped them with the laundry and garden in his spare time.

Cassette #23 - Part 2 - Paul Keller (Alumnus 1935, Professor of Communications 1948-1982), Lewis Deardorff (Alumnus 1936), Robert Beery (Trustee 1953-63, 1972-81,1982; Alumnus 1936) "Centennial Interview" 11 June 1987 by Tim Jones.

Cassette #24 - Melanie May (Alumna 1976), "Centennial Interview" by Timothy Jones, 29 June 1988.

Cassette #25 - The tape was labeled "Ralph McFadden (Alumnus 1955), J. Bentley Peters (Alumni 1962) – Part 1. " - HOWEVER - INCORRECT! - the archivist believes the first half of the tape to be an interview with Donald Durnbaugh. The interviewee refers to being editor of the "Oak Leaves" and indeed, Durnbaugh is that in 1949.  They also talk much about the post-war years and the 1940's.  McFadden graduated in 1955. Also, interviewee mentions going to Europe and meeting his wife there - which Don Durnbaugh did do (Hedda Durnbaugh).

The second half of the tape is Ralph McFadden, who did (as the interviewee states) graduate in 1955.

J. Bentley Peters graduated from Manchester in 1962. He also mentions "Barbara" who is Ralph McFadden's wife...and my brother, "Bob" the first Peace Studies Major.

Cassette #26 - J. Bentley Peters (Alumni 1962).

Cassette #34 – L. W. Shultz (Alumnus 1914) – Senior Citizen/Camp? Presentation 1 October 1975? (this is the date on the cassette box but there might be a problem with identification - the box is labeled, "Interview with L. W. Shultz 10/1/75" - which could be true, but where is the interview?  Perhaps it follows the presentation? The whole recording must be listened to thoroughly. CD available.

Description prepared 23 March 2011 by Jeanine M. Wine.

Student intern, Sarah Carman, documented the cassette tapes, CD's and transcripts in March of 2014.  Jeanine Wine updated the database to include Sarah's description on 19 March 2014.

CS's and cassette tapes were digitized during the 2017-2018 academic year by MU Department of Instructional Technologies.  Jeanine Wine reviewed the digital copies and made corrections and revisions to the description during May 2018.  Cassette tapes were then discarded due to age.  A CD exists for many of the recordings. A digital copy for all recordings is available on the archives network [Centennial Interviews].
