Centennial Interviews: 1987-1988 - interviews of Manchester College Faculty/Staff/Alumni/Friends DVDs containing .WAV files are located in the box containing the CDs (bottom shelf of the Media Shelves (IIS). The .WAV files on the DVDs are similar to RAW files and they can be used to copy and to clean-up later, but we do not use these originals (.WAV files) for general listening.
Cassette #1a – [digital archives] - L. W. Shultz - February 29, 1936, Kagawa, the great Japanese Christian, gave a series of Leap Year lectures. Shultz took charge of the program and ran it. "The Paradoxes of Jesus" was one of the topics. He spoke at Muncie Church of the Brethren on 1 March 1936, "The Meaning of the Cross." Shultz describes the experience. Shultz recounts some of the hardest times the institution went through and how the school resolved the problems. The Academy, the high school, was quite strong. Largest High School in the county outside of Wabash.
Cassette #1b - [digital archives - CD available] - Max Allen (Professor of Art 1939-1978) and wife, Sally Allen (Professor of Art 1930-1939). Max came to MC as a student in Fall of 1930 and as a teacher in the Fall of 1939, in the meantime, he graduated and taught public school for 2 years, and married Sarah Mertz, who was the professor in the Art Dpt. at M.C. Sarah insisted Max attend The Art Institute of Chicago, which Sarah stayed here in N. Manchester to teach and support. After WWII, 3 distinct groups - markedly differently kind of performance when primarily all women on campus. I was senior class sponsor and got in on one of the conflicts.

*Dr. L. Z. Bunker (MC alumna 1922) was a pre-med student at Manchester and then went to IU to finish. At the time, Manchester College had a higher rate of entrance to medical school than Indiana University. She attributes that to Professor Kintner who was in charge at the time and made an effort to help students. She talks a great deal about Professor Kintner’s teaching.
Cassette #5a,b – [digital archives - CD available] - Eldon Burke (Alumnus 1922, Professor of History/Political Science 1953-1969). “Centennial Interview of Eldon Burke by Timothy Jones,” on 2 September 1987. Eldon talks about L. D. Ikenberry through the eyes of Wilbur Dunbar, L. D. Ikenberry's grandson. Cassette #6a,b – [digital archives- CD available] - Al Deeter (Alumnus 1953, Professor of Religion/Philosophy, 1959-1999) is interviewed by Tim Jones in May of 1989. Topics include the development of the Peace Studies program and Brethren Colleges Abroad (BCA). Deeter talks of Manchester's interest in international politics and political involvement. Schutz and Cordier influenced young people to work in careers oriented towards peace concerns (Keim and L. W. Shultz are also mentioned as is Brethren Service). He talks about the history of the Peace Corps and relationship with President Kennedy's speech writer and the Church of the Brethren.
Cassette #7a,b – [digital archives -CD available] - Reflections of Ora DeLauter (Alumnus 1914). He refers to the Snell family reunion and Grandpa Snell, who was a minister in the Church of the Brethren. This appears to be a group event and others ask questions and share their recollections. It also appears as if the cassette tape was used previously and following Ora's presentation - we find a speech by a businessman who makes a presentation "service is the heart of my business" and thoughts on marketing and business.

She started in 1926 and stayed after graduation as a faculty member. She was a member of one of the Literary Societies and remembers giving impromptu speeches over random topics after the programs. There were also dining hall experiences where they were assigned tables by a host and hostess and had to discuss assigned topics. Cassette #22 - Part 1 - Paul Keller (Alumnus 1935, Professor of Communications 1948-1982), Lewis Deardorff (Alumnus 1936), Robert Beery (Trustee1953-63, 1972-81, 1982; Alumnus 1936). “Centennial History Interview 6-11-87," by Tim Jones. ***Manchester used to have four Literary Societies, two for men and two for women, that were similarto fraternities and sororities. They were supposed to be a social and academic experience for students. They occurred on Friday nights when students were stuck on campus for the weekend and consisted of speeches, music, and other performances. An officer would act as a critic and appraise the performance afterward. These were generally rather light-hearted, fun times for those students who couldn’t leave campus during the weekend. *** While at school, Lewis was hired to drive President Otho Winger during the summer.President Winger had been told by his doctor that he needed more rest, so he decided to hire someone to drive him to all of his meetings and commencement addresses at various high schools. Lewis lived in the dorms, ate with President Winger and his wife when he couldn’t go to the dining hall, and helped them with the laundry and garden in his spare time.

Cassette #25 - The tape was labeled "Ralph McFadden (Alumnus 1955), J. Bentley Peters (Alumni 1962) – Part 1. " - HOWEVER - INCORRECT! - the archivist believes the first half of the tape to be an interview with Donald Durnbaugh. The interviewee refers to being editor of the "Oak Leaves" and indeed, Durnbaugh is that in 1949. They also talk much about the post-war years and the 1940's. McFadden graduated in 1955. Also, interviewee mentions going to Europe and meeting his wife there - which Don Durnbaugh did do (Hedda Durnbaugh). The second half of the tape is Ralph McFadden, who did (as the interviewee states) graduate in 1955. J. Bentley Peters graduated from Manchester in 1962. He also mentions "Barbara" who is Ralph McFadden's wife...and my brother, "Bob" the first Peace Studies Major.
