Mary Lou Brown's 1973 article, "Whirly Girl No. 144." | Date of Accession | Unknown | Bio History Note | Aviator and member of Phoenix Church of the Brethren. The first civilian (and first woman) in the United States to become a certified Flight Instructor-Instrument (CFII) in a helicopter. In 1986 the Smithsonian Institute's Air and Space Museum recognized her with a display titled, "Women in Helicopter Aviation Today." In 2009 she was inducted into the Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame. Following Ruby's career with the U.S. Geological Survey she was noted for competing in air races, such as the "Air Race Classic." Ruby's colleague in the U. S. Geological Survey, Mary Lou Brown, considered Ruby to be the most important woman's pilot of her time.
