This is an assortment of photographs and memorabilia about Dan West, his family and Heifer Project. The collection was left with the Manchester College Archives by Janet Schrock, Dan West's daughter, for safekeeping. Ms. Schrock provided some description for the pictures and others were identified through writing on the verso. Camp Mack Image identified on verso as Faith, 8-18-1947, Camp Mack Multicultural group of women and children standing in front of a crate containing a spotted animal that appears to be a cow. The original “Faith” was sent in 1944 – so if the date on the Camp Mack photo is accurate....1947 would be too late for her...she was well on her road of service. J. Wine Jan Schrock writes, I don't recognize this photo. It might be at Camp Mack. ... ----- ... It's an awesome photo....captures the excitement of kids in the early days of Heifer. Likely I'm in it....but can't see clearly. I recognize the little dresses. Likely it's in the very early years of Heifer. Bit celebrations. Some cows came to Rock Run Church in Indiana for a dedication service. It's hard to say if it was taken at Camp Mack. It could just have easily been taken at one of the churches. There are no buildings in the photo for a landmark. The Waubee Waves (camp newspaper) might mention something about it if it was taken at Camp Mack. P. Reiff-Miller Program "The Dan West '17 Heifer International Permanent Exhibit, Dedication and Unveiling, May 10, 2010." Letter 5 September 2003 to Nikkie from Auntie Dellie (Anderson?). Eugene (Gene) spent the summer of 1945 making two trips to Poland with horses. He was a seagoing cowboy. Photocopy from the American Magazine Picture of Dan West and neighbor Russell J. Wneger leading a pair of heifers destined for Austrian families. Sticky note on article questions, "Do you have this? I first saw this picture when I was a kid in American Magazine, if I'm not mistaken. Additional photograph of Dan and his wife, Lucy. Black and White Photographs Two pictures of Dan West as an older man. Dan with calf on a farm (US?), marked on the verso, "Heifer Int'l." Picture dated Feb. 1968 and marked on the verso, "Heifer Int'l. this might be Dan West with Thurl Metzger? This is probably not Thurl Metzger since Jan does not recognize the man. Dan West with group of men labeled on verso, Dan West in Ebetsu, Sept. 1962, Heifer Int'l. Dan and Lucy West with group of men marked on verso, April, Heifer Int'l. Phil West and Jan Schrock (son and daughter of Dan West) believe this could have been taken on their parents' round the world / European trip in 1959-60 but do not know which country the picture might have been taken in. Dan and Lucy did spend quite a bit of time in Germany during the tour. Dan West and man clasping hands while supporting a painting of a heifer, labeled on verso, Bill Applegate, Heifer Int'l. Jan Schrock confirms the man in the photo as being Bill Applegate. Note: It is not known what the label Heifer Int'l indicates. It could be a location, or a topic for filing purposes, or the origin of the photo, etc. Final picture: Daniel West - 1893 - 1971. Additonal photograph of Dan and his wife, Lucy. |
