File Folder #10 -  Program for 25th Anniversary 1946-1971 of the String Festival, featuring the Indianapolis Arlington High School Orchestra, Priscilla Smith, Conductor and Vaclav Nelhybel, Guest Conductor, with 300 Indiana String Musicians, Vernon Stinebaugh, Founder and Coordinator.  At this event the famous Nelhybel dedicated a composition to Stinebaugh and the symphony, entitled,"Danza." The folder contains newspaper articles and spreads.

Vernon Stinebaugh attended Manchester College from 1937-1939 and then accepted a full scholarship to Sherwood Music School, Chicago, IL, 1939-41. A detailed description of Dr. Stinebaugh's diversified educational background is found in his resume.

Arthur Fiedler - is the famed conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra.  His appearance as conductor on the Manchester College campus was aborted in 1958 by a paralyzing east coast snowstorm.  Fiedler took a "snowcheck" and conducted the Mother's Day concert of the Manchester College String Symphony, 1959, that included 300 specially selected northern Indiana high school musicians.

The Manchester College String Festivals - (information obtained from the history composed by The String Symphony Cabinet) - The String Symphony was organized in 1946 when Vernon Stinebaugh joined the music faculty at Manchester College. The original idea - "to give qualified string players in small, isolated high schools, where there is no existing orchestra, an opportunity to join with many others interested in the same type of musical expression and artistic growth."  The idea of inviting high school players to participate under a guest conductor in a portion of the concert was initiated in 1948.  25 string players from 7 northern Indiana schools responded to the invitation.  The program was well received and the number of participants grew throughout the years.

Vernon Stinebaugh was not paid for his work with the String Festival program.  He did this on his own free time out of passion for music and commitment to young musicians.  [Archivists's personal note following a phone conversation with Vernon Stinebaugh on 6 April 2012.  Vernon did not use the words "passion" and "commitment," but I sensed these things...Jeanine Wine].
