Scope and Content

Eleven issues of the Newsletter of the North Manchester Historical Society, Inc., containing historical information about events and figures of North Manchester.  Some of these people are connected to Manchester College. Topics of each issue will be highlighted, but they are not alone in the volume:

February 1986, Volume III, Number 1

"The Lawyer takes a Bride," an article about Thomas Marshall and his wife, Lois Kimsey Marshall.

"I'm going to buy this here farm of yours," by Orpha Weimer about Harter Garber.

August 1986, Volume III, Number 3:

"Memories of Jacob Ulery," by Joan Koller.

"The Paving of main Street,: by Virginia Glist.

May 1987, Volume IV, Number 2:

"The Whistles of Our Forefathers, A story of the manufacturing industries of North Manchester of the past and present."  Reproduced from an article compiled by William E. Billing, 1950.

August 1987, Volume IV, Number 3:

"Paradise Springs," by Orpha Weimer.  Aftermath of the "Trail of Tears.  Also, the Pottawatomi removal of 1935, the March of Death or Trail of Courage. Chart of land purchases from native American tribes with various dates.  Chief Richardville.

"The Leedy motor Company, 105 North mill Street, Memories of Howard C. Warren."

February 1988, Volume V, Number 1:

"Early Education and Family history," by Orrel Little.

August 1988, Volume V, Number 3:

"The Rock and Hospital on the Wabash," Research by Mary O'Hara, condensed by Orpha Weimer.

 

November 1988, Volume V, Number 4

 

February 1989, Volume VI, Number 1:

"Double Election Excitement!" by Allan White.  The election of 1912, when the Democrats swept the nation with the election of Woodrow Wilson as President and Thomas Marshall as Vice President.  Also, a North Manchester resident, John Isenbarger, went to his first term in the Indiana General Assembly.

May 1989, Volume VI, Number 2:

"The Hamilton Opera House, A Memoir 1880-1962," by Dr. L. Z. Bunker.  Elizabeth Henney Rex and C. E. Henney, curtain and scenery painters. Annie Oakley?, Nora Bayes, Fay Bainter, performers here.

Mrs. Eleanor Schmedel Himebaugh, daughter of Roland Schmedal, editor of the News Journal. Governor Orr of Indiana and the country of China.

August 1989, Volume VI, Number 3:

"The Prairie Lives," by Dr. L. Z. Bunker. 

May 1990, Volume VII, Number 2:

"Sadie Wampler," by J. Allen Willmert, College Librarian Emeritus, Manchester College.

Archivist Note

On 24 August 2012 these issues of the Newsletter of the North Manchester Historical Society, Inc. were arranged with other editions of the newsletter [Unit #6, IS].

Gary Montel of the Alumni Office sent this collection  to the Archives. He received it from Nancy Tyndall whose mother, Marie (Ikenberry) Hamilton, graduated from Manchester College in 1923. The collection was comprised of

 "Old Houses of North Manchester, Indiana," written by L. Z. Bunker, M. D. and retyped and illustrated by Allan White
