He did not know who had given the essay book to him. | Scope and Content | 1. One "STIM-YOU-LUS BOOK," prepared by Fred R. Conkling, Manchester College. The words, "Rex Good, Freshman Normal (Monterey Indiana)....and "Rex Good - Freshman Normal at Manchester College," are written on the cover. The book was probably used sometime between 1933 and 1952.
| Date of Accession | Unknown | Bio History Note | Professor Fred R. Conkling was the head of the Department of English and and debating and taught at Manchester College from 1923 - 1959. In trying to date this essay book entitled, A Spring Term STIM-YOU-LUS BOOK that Professor Conkling had prepared for a course in freshman composition, the Archivist attempted to find the date of graduation of "Rex Good" whose name was written on the book's cover as well as the dates of graduation of some of the authors in the compilation of sample essarys.
According to the "Aurora," Rex Good graduated with a B.S. in History in 1952, although the Alumni Directory lists his graduation date as 1955. His photo is not included in the 1949 "Aurora" and the Archivist wonders if he took an extension course at Montery, Indiana?
Some of the authors of the very interesting essays that are included as example pieces are Mary Gilbert Sheller (graduating from Manchester College in 1926), Bertha Dolby Cullar ( M.C. graduate 1925), Dixie Roach Harris (M.C. graduate 1931), Erle V. Cullar ( M.C. graduate 1927), Cecil Snyder (M.C. graduate 1928), Vernon Van Dyke (M.C. graduate 1933), Georgia Gay Kindy (M.C. graduate 1929), Joe Wagner (M.C. graduate 1929) and Hazel Peffer Lauer (Normal graduate 1927).
