| Bio History Note | Rock River Seminary closed in 1878 and its buildings were acquired by the Brethren who reopened the institution as Mount Morris College. Richard A. Edwards and John Harvey Parr, both of whom had been Jane Addams' teachers at Cedarville, Illinois later taught Classics and Natural Science, respectively, at the Rock River Seminary in the late 1870's. It has also been suggested that Ellen Gates Starr, co-founder of Hull House, with Jane Addams, may have had some association with those institutions.
This collection contains correspondence from Richard Seidel to Ferne Baldwin.
The collection also contains a flyer from 1880 advertising Mt. Morris College to the Brethren and announcing special travel accommodations to the college by the Chicago & Iowa Railroad. Following is an excerpt:
"A Home School conducted by Brethren, offering to all the facilities of a thorough Academic and Collegiate education on very easy terms, and where the principles of plain dressing, plain living and plain habits are taught." |
