4.  Plaque: "EHS Bethany Hospital is pleased to recognize Flora Church of the Brethren as a 1991 Member of the Company of the Committed."  Note:  EHS = Evangelical Hospital System(s?).

5.  One typed card standing alone, "These are Bulletins and Record Books given to the Flora Church of the Brethren by Rev. Ray Zook, former Pastor. (1937-1947) He instroduced the use of Bulletins at this church in 1937."

6.  One white flag with a blue rectangle and red cross. A protruding thumbtack still stuck in the flag was removed. Not clear whether this is from "Flora" or from "Living Faith."  Archivist believes they are from "Flora."

7.  One American flag. Not clear whether this is from "Flora" or from "Living Faith." Archivist believes they are from "Flora."

8.  Linens. Not clear whether linens are from "Flora" or from "Living Faith."  The Archivist believes they are from "Flora."

9.  A large bible,"The Parallel Bible, The Holy Bible, Containing the Authorized and Revised Versions of the Old and New Testaments...," Union Publishing Company, Indianapolis, Indiana. The way the objects were organized it appears that this bible might be from the "Living Faith" Church of the Brethren, since the other bible was identified as being from "Flora."    This bible is also beautifully engraved with illustrations.  The Archivist believes this bible is the only object in the stack from "Living Faith."

Bio History Note

"The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ: Translated Out Of The Original Greek; And With The Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised,"  New York: American Bible Society, Instituted In The Year MDCCCXVI, 1868 [Sm. Plica, Octavo.]

  • "Pretty Prairie Church" is written on a page in the front along with some other characters and words, like "Penmanship." In blank pages in the back of the book there are words like "Sabbeth School...."with a name that is barely legible, if at all.  Another name, "Marie?" "Sterrett" is also written.

"[Authorized Version.] The Complete Text Pictorial Family Bible Containing The Old And New Testaments, Together With The Apocrypha, The Psalms In Metre, and A Concordance: To Which Are Added Aids For Readers And Students," Walden & Stowe, Publishers, Cincinnati, Chicago, St. Louis, copyrighted 1881. This bible has gorgeous engravings.  Heavy tape has been used to hold the cover with the contents. A sticker on the front of this large bible reads, "The First Pulpit Bible used at the Flora Church of the Brethren." There is a history penned into the front of the bible:

  • Known as Bachelar Run Congregation (Before the divide of district in 1911).  Bachelor Run Congregation had 2 groups! -
    • The Upper Church House at Walnut Stump now known as Bachelar Run Church and
    • The Lower House was known as the Flora Church until 1911.

One typed card standing alone with tape and saran wrap stating, "These are Bulletins and Record Books given to the Flora Church of the Brethren by Rev. Ray Zook, former Pastor. (1937-1947) He introduced the use of Bulletins at this church in 1937."

Linens:  The significance of the linens is not clear.  Perhaps they were used on the communion table or altar or perhaps as towels during Love Feast and Communion?

Beautifully illustrated large bible, "The Parallel Bible, The Holy Bible, Containing the Authorized and Revised Versions of the Old and New Testaments...," Union Publishing Company, Indianapolis, Indiana.  Also included in this bible are album pages for the placement of photographs, a marriage license, a family "temperance" pledge, and many more printed pages for the inscription of information.

Archivist Note

At least one box of  materials came to the Archives on 19 June 2003.  The box was marked, from the "Living Faith Church of the Brethren."  Another box  contained Flora history from the "Flora Church of the Brethren," Flora, Indiana. When Jeanine Wine arrived in the Archives in April 2006, it appeared that these boxes had come to the Archives at the same time. It is difficult to tell in 2010 what objects belong to "Living Faith" and what objects belong to "Flora."  Jeanine feels as if only the large bible, "The Parallel Bible, The Holy Bible, Containing the Authorized and Revised Versions of the Old and New Testaments...," Union Publishing Company, Indianapolis, Indiana, is the only object that comes from the "Living Faith" Church of the Brethren, and that all the other objects come from "Flora Church of the Brethren."  This is a hunch and should not be taken as final authority.
