"The Address of Moderator Otho Winger," at the Conference of the Church of the Brethren, La Verne, California, 1928. | Date of Accession | 29 December 2017 | Bio History Note | Otho Winger speaks of the "Kingdom of God," the history of the Christian church, the Bible as the Word of God, the founding of the Church of the Brethren, missions and missionaries, evangelism, the importance of the pastoral and free ministry, education, the mindset of Church of the Brethren youth, and much more. The following is an excerpt: The Church of the Brethren, small though it may be in numbers, has a a great program of work. It is large enough to enlist the best talent and the best means that we have. I am thoroughly disgusted with that group raised within our own church who feel that they are too big to work in the Church of the Brethren. The church has great needs, we all must admit. But the church also presents equally great opportunities for the capable and faithful. Perhaps you have said that our program is too big. That all depends upon your faith and consecration. What is the objects of our lives? Is it meat and drink? Is it ease and pleasure? Is it dress and autos? Is it bonds and farms? Hear ye again the words of our Christ: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you." How can we profess loyalty to the kingdom of God and yet be so careful about "these things"? How can any Christian enjoy "these things" if they are not dedicated to the kingdom? If we had done this we would have an abundance for the program which we already have before us.... | Archivist Note | Description prepared 29 December 2017 by Jeanine Wine. |
