Geo. L. Studebaker's Diary for 1888. Presented by Manerva Simonton. Christmas 2887. Was Manerva a relative of Mary's or was Minerva actually Mary's given name? More research is needed.
Those writing in the book are from various places including Schideler, Granville and Eaton Indiana.
Otho Winger in his book, "Memories of ...Manchester" devotes attention to the Studebakers. Some information from the book follows:
George L. Studebaker was called into the ministry of the Church of the Brethren in 1981. He and Mary Simonton Studebaker were married in 1882. From 1897 to 1906 he pastored the Church of the Brethren in Muncie, Indiana. From Muncie the Studebakers moved to North Manchester so that their son could attend College (Mark E.). George served as field representative for the College and Mrs. Studebaker served as matron of the Ladies' Home. They were known to hundred of students as "Uncle George" and "Aunt Molly."
George again served as pastor at Muncie and then was called to Indianapolis where he pastored a church there. The couple spent their last years in Muncie.
Mary died on 25 October 1936 and Brother Studebaker was heartbroken. He was struck and instantly killed by a car two weeks after his wife was buried. This was a much respected and loved couple.
Mark, their son, taught for a few years at Manchester College, then at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was the head of the commercial department at Ball State Teachers' College for many years. Manchester College granted him the degree, Doctos of Laws, in 1938.
