D. L. Miller, a business man from Polo, Illinois, served as the business manager when Mount Morris Seminary and Collegiate Institute opened its doors on August 20, 1879. In order to get Miller to come to Mt. Morris, Elder M. S. Newcomer, trustee of the College, bought Miller's stock of goods at Polo. The first President, President Stein, left his position and family under the pretense of taking a trip to Europe. He was not heard from again for two years. It was then learned that he was living in a western state with a young woman who had resided with the Stein family in Mt. Morris. On March 6, 1882, D. L. Miller was elected president to fill out the rest of the school year and in June, he was asked to take the presidency for a two-year period. Although lacking in academic training, Miller won the respect of students, faculty and townspeople and was an able administrator. At the end of his first year he decided to take a trip to Europe and left the school in the hands of vice-president S. Z. Sharp. Upon Miller's return, he requested that he be relieved of the presidency with the hope that he could devote his time to the publishing interests of the church. | | Archivist Note | Description prepared 25 July 2008 by Jeanine M.
