Bio History Note

Memories of Ikenberry Hall before demolition.  Robert Studebaker. Tim Campbell, former RA.

Seranade at East Hall at Oakwood Hall.

Song - "The Ikenberry Blues."

The tradition of the Ikenberry serenade has an unknown beginning.  It was a firm tradition by 1971, but had its roots much earlier, perhaps reaching back to the late 1940’s. Campus males from Ikenberry Hall, and then males from Ikenberry in conjunction with the newly constructed Calvin Ulrey (circa 1950), would serenade the Oakwood women.  The serenade expanded as other female residences were added (East Hall circa 1956). Somewhere along the line, Calvin Ulrey participation waned, and the serenade became an Ikenberry tradition.

Archivist Note

VHS tape digitized by Stan Pittman's Information Technology Services team in May 2013.

Background:

1.Just went through some Ikenberry Hall dorm meeting minutes from mid-1970’s and found David Sollenberger was secretary.  I called him up to see if he remembered when the serenade started.  He said that when he was a freshman in 1971 – the Ikenberry seniors were already calling it a tradition – so he guesses at least the mid  to late 1960’s and thinks it might go back even earlier.

2.  Spoke with Ferne Baldwin – former archivist -she didn’t know.

3. Spoke with Art Hunn (MC 1954) who was a Calvin Ulrey man – a freshman the first year CU opened [CU dedicated in February of 1949].  Art said that the men of both dorms [Ikenberry and CU] would serenade the women of Oakwood Hall each year.   J. Wine 6 October 2014.
