“Writing Book, Manchester College and the Bible School.” Businesswriting practice book and Business Penmanship samples 1898 and 1899 for Viola Rau. She would marry Menno Young and become Viola Young.

“The College Standard,” March 1900, Vol. 1, No. 10.  W. H. Howe receives a governmental appointment as Pedigoge to Puerto Rico. Business Education is highlighted.

“The College Standard,” November 1900, Vol. 2, No. 6.

“The College Standard,” December 1900, Vol. 2, No. 7 –Cyrus Funderburg is cited in the alumni section.

“The College Standard,” January 1901, Vol. 2, No. 8 – Bertha Hoover, Syracuse, Indiana, called back to her family upon the death her grandfather. She would marry and become Bertha Culler.

“The College Standard,” May 1901, Vol. 2, No. 12 –  (pg. 7) – “The trustees of the college have leased the institution to the following professors: E. M. Crouch, T. S.Moherman, I. Bruce Book and L. D. Ikenberry.” The lessees effected an organization among themselves as follows: Crouch, President; Moherman, Principal Bible School; Book, Secretary; Ikenberry, Treasurer. 

“The College Standard,” June 1901, Vol. 3, No. 1 – Mattie Cunningham, Secretary of the Alumni group and part of the Missionary Reading Circle. Also Bertha Hoover, pg. 6 – an alumna of the music department writes a paragraph. She would become Bertha Hoover Culler (January 1901, Vol. 2, No. 8).

 

1898 – 29th Anniversary of the Philomatheon University – in Lincoln Hall.  This program belonged to M. S. Young.  Is this Manchester related as MC had a Philomatheon literary society?

“Our Mountain Work” – published in 1923 - Home Department, General Mission Board of the Church of the Brethren – article by Nelie Wampler in Greene County, Virginia.  Aid Society meeting in Winona pledged to raise money to buy a farm in Greene County, Virginia to build an Industrial School for work among the mountaineers (circa 1923).  Included is an article by Mrs. A. F. Bollinger (Florence Bollinger) about a visit from Bessie Rider.  Article by Amsey Bollinger (husband of Florence Bollinger).

 

“Missionary Visitor,” Vol. XIV, Nov. 1912, No. 11 – Bulletin of information authorized by The General Conference at Hershey, PA.  June and July of 1918. President’s statement defining non-combatant service – [Central Service Committee] – order placing religious objectors to war in the non-combant service – promulgated by President Wilson. Conscientious Objector/Peace.

Bio History Note

Dale Young, who served as Dean of Students at Manchester College (1964-1965) had children; Dale Young, Darlene Young and Dean Young.

Historical and genealogical excerpt from the letter accompanying the collection, written by Dean A. Young:

My Grandparents, Menno and Viola (Rau) Young attended Manchester College during the years 1898-1899.  Thereafter, Menno Young served as a teacher in the Springfield Township schools, lay minister at the Akron-Springfield Church of the Brethren and farmer in Summit County Ohio.  His wife Viola Young raised three children, including my Father Dale Young, who served as Dean of Students at Manchester College 1964-1965.

The book and editions of the Aurora had an odor. The Auroras also were in less than good quality.  They will undergo observation in the Archives' office
