Helser, same shot as above. | Date of Accession | 31 July 2008 | Bio History Note | Albert David Helser, 1897 - 1969, graduated from Manchester College (BA, 1919). His wife, Lola Bechtel Helser also graduated from Manchester (BA, 1919). A photograph in the 1919 Aurora shows A. D. as Business Manager of the Aurora Staff. He also was Senior President, Supt. of the West End Mission, President All Seniors, Hall Teacher in the Young Men's Home and a member of the Majestica and Glee Club. Lola was the Secretary of All-Senior Class, a College Sunday School Teacher and a member of the Majestica. A quote beside her senior photo reads "Like a quiet lake unruffled by the wind." In 1922 she graduated from the Illinois (Cook County) Training School for Nurses, Chicago and married A. D. also in 1922.
The Brethren Encyclopedia contains an article about each individual. In 1923, A. D. and Lola joined H. Stover and Ruth Royer Kulp in Church of the Brethren mission work at Garkida, Bornu Province, Nigeria. In 1936 the couple affiliated with the Sudan Interior Mission and continued work in Africa until 1962.
A. D. Helser was known for his concern for lepers. He authored several books on missions, including the first book about Brethren work in Nigeria, In Sunny Nigeria (1926). Other works include, Education of Primitive People (a PhD thesis, 1934) and The Glory of the Impossible (1940).
