Scope and Content | BC2015/2 – This collection contains early letters of members in good standing who are presumably transferring in and out of Ladoga area congregations during the 1800’s. They contain names of members as well as names of ministers, elders, deacons, or clerks from the outgoing German Baptist Brethren and Church of the Brethren groups (after the divide). There have been too many hands, and too many years, involved in organizing and describing these early letters from perhaps three or more collections. It is thought that these letters pertain to the Ladoga area (and also from the Ladoga Church of the Brethren), but letters from other Indiana congregations might have been mingled with the Ladoga collection as well. Researchers should double-check family names and locations before determining that Ladoga area is the appropriate destination for these traveling Brethren: 21 October 1826 – Church meeting at Joseph Kingery, Ohio, Preble County – William R. Smith and Martha Smith Daniel Miller, Elizabeth Miller, John Myer , Elisebeth Myer, Btt() Lybrook, Marey Lybrook, Joseph Kingery, Eve Kingery, Tobias Miller, Sary Miller, Willium Mays?, Elisabeth Mays?, Jacob Lybook , Elizabeth Lybrook, Pheb? Note: “ History of the Church of the Brethren in Indiana” indicates that Willam R. Smith and “Mary” Smith were early settlers in the Ladoga area. The Archivist believes a mistake has been made and that Smith’s wife’s name is actually, “Martha.” The book also says that the Smiths moved from Darke County, Ohio, which is the county just north of Preble County. Perhaps the Smiths lived in Darke County but were members of the congregation in Preble County? Montgomery County, Ohio is just east of Preble County. A “Mary Smith” did arrive in July 1827 (see her letter below). She was from the Four Mile area in Franklin County, IN. 21 October 1826 – Church meeting at Joseph Kingery, Ohio, Preble County – Henry Moss and Frances Moss Mass?
