Edith Miller (Deedie) was the sister-in-law of Otho Winger, former President of Manchester College.  Edith's sister, Ida Miller, was married to Otho Winger and another sister, Bertha Miller was married to Levi Neher (deceased in 1924) and then to Mr. A. M. Stine.  Edith never married and took some care of all the Miller grandchildren in turn.  The oldest, Royal, could not say Edith and called her "Deedie."  Deedie became a name the family called her by.  Edith kept many personal letters, family memorabilia and obituaries of Brethren and folks from the town of North Manchester.  The archivist believes Edith attended West Manchester Church of the Brethren.

"In Memory of Ida Miller Winger," by Otho Winger:  Ida's last words were, "Take good care of Edith."

Edith's sister, Bertha Miller Neher by first marriage and Bertha Stine by the second), was one of the first ordained women ministers in the Church of the Brethren.  The following information is taken from "The Brethren Encyclopedia:"

Stine, Bertha Miller Neher, 1873-1948, teacher, minister, author, and daughter of Amos B. and Sarah Cupp Miller.  Bertha was a graduate of Mt. Morris Academy (1893) and married Levi M. Neher in 1894.  She was licensed to preach by the Milford, IN, congregation in 1908. Bertha Neher wrote a well-known children's book, "Among the Giants" (1895, often reprinted),  and contributed to the Brethren Teacher's Monthly (1907-32). Levi Neher died in 1924 and Bertha married A. M. Stine in 1928.

Chief Pokagon was the last Chief of the Potawatomies and was the son of Chief Leopold Pokagon who sold the United States over one million acres of tribal land in the Chicago area in 1833 at the price of 3 cents per acre.  Much of Simon's life was spent in an attempt to receive at least partial payment of the money owed to the Potawatomies by the government, eventually securing an appropriation of some $150,000 which he divided among the remaining members of the tribe.

Provenance: Unknown.  The Archivist found materials in a box and on shelves near the box in the Archives "Office" in April of 2006.  There was no real identification as to what was included in the collection and where the collection stopped or started or how it was combined with other materials that had been brought to the Archives and occupied the same box or shelves....some materials probably got separated from the original collection.  The Archivist has made an attempt to bring the materials together and organize them.  She believes that some descriptions of the materials are written in Edith's own hand.
