Enclosed letter from Jo Young Switzer reads, in reference to the Hash House, "This was a group of men who rented rooms from an elderly handicapped woman off campus."  She indicates that Benton Rhoades and Virgil St. John were members of the Hash House Gang as well.

John F. Young graduated from Manchester College in 1942.

John F. Young is the father of President Jo Young Switzer.

Virgil St. John is included in one photograph of cocoa making.

Debra Mishler is the daughter of Virgil St. John.  She visited the Archives on 11 April 2014 and provided the following:

Virgil (MC Class of 1943) came to Manchester because Professor Edward Kintner visited Virgil's parent's farm.  Virgil had been a High School student at Strycker High School in Strycker, Ohio.  He had grown up on the farm almost as an only child because his adopted brother was 11 years older than he, and was no longer on the farm. This is the Manchester story of a boy from a  family who  had hardly even graduated from High School - arriving on campus.  He had to find 3 jobs to support his education. He drove truck for the tomato canning factory, he shoveled coal for the MC power plant, and he also was a janitor for the administration building. He is the only person that Debra knows who sent his dirty laundry home by mail and his mother would do the laundry and send it back by mail. 

When Virgil became part of the "Hash House Gang" all the young men there had grown up on farms,  and so they often misspoke the English language.  There was a rule.  Anytime they used incorrect grammar, they were fined a few cents - a system they devised amongst themselves to improve their English.
