From the program: Jean Childs '54 Young followed two older sisters to Manchester and earned a degree in elementary education. She had a dis??nguished career as a teacher and served as an advocate for educa??on, children's welfare and civil rights. She worked alongside her husband U.S. Ambassador and former City of Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement. She served Manchester University as a trustee from 1975 to 1979 and received an honorary doctorate from Manchester in 1980. She died of liver cancer in 1994 at the age of 61. The Jean Childs Young Intercultural Center will serve as a home away from home for Manchester University's international students. Located within the facility will be The Toyota Round, made possible through the generosity of Toyota Motor North America, Inc. The dedicated space will serve as a meeting and programming hub for our five multicultural clubs, and as a resource and programming center for the campus and northeast Indiana region. Toyota Motor North America has a commitment to diversity and inclusion, which is grounded in its guiding principles of continuous improvement and respect for people. They are focused on educating today's students to build tomorrow's leaders. Manchester University also appreciates the support from Ambassador Andrew Young and his family, and many other alumni and friends that made this facility a reality.
