Scope and ContentHelman creates the Committee for the Future, 1969-1971 - to analyze the present philosophy of the College in regard to educating students for a pluralistic society and to recommend future directions. Among considerations of the committee will be such things as suggested ways of creating a climate for mutual understanding and deciding what kind of admissions policies are consistent with the policies which evolve.

Some issues:

Mr. Mock met with the committee to describe the situation regarding Black speakers for Spring Convocation.

Students accepting membership on the committee - Fred Bullock,  Karen Beatty, James Fontama, Pat Thirckles - some of these students were African American.

20 November 1969 minutes include possible directions for the committee -
1. Philosophy of recruitment (black students and foreign students).
2. Analysis of programs re: High rise/Educationally disadvantaged.
3. Atmosphere re: Racial attitudes and human relations on campus.

20 October 1969 letter to Dean Book and others by President Helman - the creation of of a special committee following the events of the night of October 8.

Peace Corps Committee: 1964-1965 through 1967-1968 (discontinued). This folder includes names and addresses of former MC students and graduates who are serving in The Peace Corps, IVS, or BVS (1966). Correspondence from Dan West inviting students to work in the Heifer Project Peace Corps program.

Public Programs Committee: 1956-1957 through 1963-1964.

Personnel Committee: 1956-1957 through 1964-1965: Campus and student concerns - Some of the issues addressed follow:- 1958, problem of interracial dating - programs and events for Freshmen - student counseling - disciplinary problems - dormitory concerns - fire hazards - feasibility of combining dormitory fee for radio and record players with the regular room rates - some colleges are experiencing co-educational college housing (8 April 1958) - 8 April 1958 student retention -  etc.

Teachers' Committee: 1957-1958 - including but not limited to; job applications, Memo regarding Faculty Rank, Tenure, and Salary, class schedules, Dr. Muir's leaves of absence, the hiring of T. Q. Bio History NoteNote that the Committee for the Future is organized following the October 1969 racial incident on campus that involved Black students seeking sanctuary in Petersime Chapel.
President Helman writes the following in his 20 October 1969 letter to Dean Book: As you know, the special committee which i appointed to make an investigation of the events of the night of October 8 and to recommend certain steps to deal with the problems--both immediate and long range--recommended that a committee for the future be appointed.

Teachers' Committee - to assist the president in the area of administration related to the locating, interviewing, selecting, appointing, promoting, demoting, retiring, and dismissing of personnel directly connected with the academic program. In a number of htese functions the committee will confer with the properly concerned departmental and divisional heads before reaching conclusions.
