S. S. Blough was a professor at Manchester College in1914 at the same time his son, Carman G. Blough, was a student at the school.

In the Fall of 1914, Carman, a College Senior,  and Academy, Junior, Charles Krieghbaum, both on the MC Basketball team, were on a College bus headed for a game in Urbana.

Tragically, the bus was struck by a freight train while crossing the Big Four Railroad in North Manchester. Carman Blough had his right arm cut off at the shoulder and Charles Kreigbaum had his leg cut off between the knee and the hip.

President Otho Winger was summoned and arrived just in time to go with the boys to the Wabash Hospital, where the engine and caboose of the train made the trip in record time.

Otho WInger held Charles' leg and talked with him during the trip. 

Carman completed his college course and went to the university. He became an expert in tax economy and for many years was adviser to the governor of Wisconsin and spent some time in government service in Washington, D.C.  He eventually became a special accountant in a Chicago firm, and according to Otho Winger in "Memories of ...Manchester," pg. 180, drew "a large salary."
