Grant through the Civil War, giving assistance as Grant struggled with a possible addiction to alcohol. Rawlins followed President Grant to Washington, D.C. despite health concerns of Rawlins' own, the D. C. climate probably contributing to Rawlins' early death. Some historians feel that Rawlins has never received sufficient credit for his efforts to support and assist Grant. | Archivist Note | Description prepared 7 July 2011 by Jeanine M. Wine. |
