Currently, the sufferings of 300,000 people is equal to the atomic bomb. Please wear this badge to show your support for the relief efforts and the people affected by this calamity." NOTE: The concept of the folded paper crane was the idea of Sadako Sasaki, a young girl who, when hospitalized with radiation sickness that presented a few years after the bomb, told herself that she would get well if she could fold 1,000 cranes. Sadly, she passed away having folded 964.

Archivist Note

These materials had been in the Archives prior to April 2006.  The items had been separated and it was difficult for the Archivist to tell what objects belonged in a single collection.  Volunteer, Lisa Iversen, made an inventory of the objects during the Summer of 2011.  It was Lisa's determination that most, if not all, of the items belonged to Leona Row Eller who spent time serving the World Friendship Center in Hiroshima, Japan.  Lisa was responsible for scanning Leona's scrapbook/photograph album before it was dissassembled for preservation purposes.  This scan will give the researcher the knowledge of how the objects were organized on each page.

Description prepared 10 August 2011 by Jeanine M. Wine.
