These booklets of Martin Luther King’s speech at Manchester College were published in August 2012. They replace the original speech booklets, which had unintentionally omitted large segments of the speech and contained numerous errors.
This copy was transcribed from an audio recording of King’s speech. The punctuation reflects King’s speech patterns to help the reader better imagine his presentation.
Publication of this booklet was underwritten by a Plowshares Grant (Lilly Endowment Inc.), as part of the Martin Luther King Project coordinated by the Office of Public Relations and led by Jeri Kornegay, public relations director. Transcription and editing was by Fran Adler of Fort Wayne, a copy editor for The News-Sentinel newspaper. Karen Ames ’09 also worked closely on this project as the MLK Project intern. The designer was Brenda Carver of the Marketing Department of the University. The photographs are from the University Archives. The printer was Parrot Press of Fort Wayne; the first printing was 500 copies.
We have attempted to retrieve the erroneous speech booklets and urge those who still possess them to exchange them for correct ones or destroy them to help Manchester preserve the true history of King’s visit to Manchester.
