BOX NUMBER ONE -Materials from College and Mount Holyoke 1927-1929 and Doris' John Bunyan book research materials:

Packet #1 - 1923 invitation to be on the editorial board citing the strict qualifications necessary for such a position - Notes with friends, perhaps written back-and-forth during classes - Birthday card from parents - Letters and notes from friends and family - Drawings - High Honors in English - Valentine from "Pa" (hand-drawn and hand-written) - Graduation telegram - Congratulations letter 13 June 1927 East Weymouth Church from Rev. Karnek Handanian.

Packet #3 - Papers from college 1923-1927.  "Course of Study" outline (Garey's? or was this an outlining assignment?), loose leaf binder with notes on the "Old English Period."

Packet #4a - Autobiographical materials.

Packet #4B - Doris' personal compositions and talks, eg. - "Student Guide for the Writing of Term Papers," by Doris Garey - Personal notes on historical readings - Treatise on Grammar, "Dry Bones to Set You Free," by Doris Garey.

Packet #5 - Background material for Doris' book on John Bunyan's "Pilgrims Progress."

In addition:

Harmonica (It is not know to whom the harmonica belonged or when it was used).

Small sparkling stone (placed in metal canister for safety by archivist and might have been from Doris' time at Mount Holyoke)

Diaries 1923, 1924, 1925, 1926, 1927.  Note, in the front of the diaries is a space for height and weight.  In 1927 Doris was 5" 2" tall and weighted 93 pounds.

Detailed hand-written travel documentary on what is probably Doris' 1961-1962 trip to Great Britain.  Slides and mementos.

Small notebook containing sewing samples. (In a paper outlining names, attributes and goals of students, Doris' ambition was to be a Home Economics teacher).

Autograph book.

Magna cum Laude, Mount Holyoke College diploma.

Remnants of Doris' early years, including painting of a pear, "The Snowflake Story," card to "Pa" from Doris and Carl. Photograph of "Carl" (probably Doris' brother Carl Garey). Photograph of "Freda" - perhaps Doris' sister.

More production programs, including "Pilgrimter - Centenary Pageant 1921," and music from "Se-a-wan-a (The Cherry Maid)" an operetta for women's Voices, and Harvard exercises 18 June 1929 in Latin with a program within.

"Topical Program for Local Unions 1949, Woman's Christian Temperance Union of Indiana."

"Topical Program 1940 Woman's Christian Temperance Union of Indiana," with signature of Mrs. L. W> Shultz on cover  and names and dates on page 4, Date: January 19, 1940, Hostess: Mrs. Otho Winger, Assistant: Miss Edith Miller, Leaders: Mrs. Roscoe Garber (?) and Mrs. Oliver Williams.

Piece of fabric pinned to paper, "Mother's signature before marriage" (Mary ?? Richards?).

Two glass bracelets and one gold bracelet. (18K ?).

Charms: Cup, book, bottle.

Packet containing some type of very instable material "R of England" written on paper.

Purple stained glass (in mylar).

Collection of small pins: "Congregational Second Year," "CE," "HHHH Junior Extension Work, Massachusetts," "James Humphrey School 19."

Small handwritten scroll with some type of code.

Newspaper (in folder) with items from WWI: Button (in mylar), "Welcome Home Fighting 26th YD," bullet, envelope containing bottle of "sand" scribed, "From mines of Cloth Hall  Ypres, Belgium after shelling by Germans Nov. 15 - 1914 Brought home by Capt. David E. Ford M.D. of Harvard Unit who joined the British Expeditionary Forces before U. S. entered the war.

Pen.

One envelope titled, "Account - Doris' 4 yrs. at Mount Holyoke" and containing an itemized list of Doris' expenses.

"Class Standing" (probably from High School) - with aspirations of students.

Booklet of the Congregational Church's 50th Anniversary of the New Church 1905-1955.  One photograph that might be picture of the "old" church before remodeling?

Weymouth High School "Reflector" publications with poem by Carl Garey (Doris' brother).

Graduation program for Weymouth High School/Norfolk County Agricultural School and special certificate students.

Bio History Note

B. A., Mount Holyoke College.

M. A. and Ph.D., University of Wisconsin.

Professor Doris Garey, who taught English at Manchester College from 1956-1972.

Carl and Freda are Doris' brother and sister as evidenced in the deed of gift form where Doris' personal and professional library was given to Manchester College following Doris' death (see faculty/staff files in archives' vault).

Doris had been a member of the Congregational Church.

Ypres Cloth Hall (from Wikipedia 21 February 2017) large medieval commercial building in Ypres, Belgium and was one of the largest commercial building of the Middle Ages when it was the main market and warehouse for the city's prosperous cloth industry. It lay in ruins after it was devastated by artillery fire in WWI.
