The note on the picture's verso reads: Please return (to) W. H. Howe North Manchester, (In) W. H. Howe is the son of North Manchester College's founder, David Howe. The picture documents the oral tradition that in the early days (before this photo was taken circa 1898 - see Orpurt's history of campus trees MC2009/140), trees on campus grounds were "topped," and the wood sold, so that the institution might raise a little money. The photograph was found by Jeanine Wine during July 2018. It had been pushed to the back of a bottom drawer of Otho Winger's filing cabinet (Archives' vault). It was already dirty and split into 2 pieces. |
