Scope and Content

Historical videos of May Day and Comencement exercercises at Manchester College 1939 and 1941.  Camp Mack Day circa 1941-1942.

 

1.  A note written by Jeanine Wine on VHS box MC2009/147a, reads, "Manchester College Historical Movies (from S-VHS Master)."

 

2. A note written by Stan Pittman on VHS box MC2009/147b reads, "This one is a standard UVS copy of the "Historical films" we did last week."  On VHS label, "Tape put together by Stan P. (Pittman) ...(in Oct. 1989?).

 

3. MC2009/147c is a DVD-R.


4. MP4 File MC2009/147a - 1939 May Day  - 1939 Graduation and 1941 May Day -1941 Graduation - 1941 Camp Mack Day - Oct 1941 Homecoming.


5. MP4 File MC2009/147b - Manchester College circa the 1930's with Native Americans participating in the 1934 Homecoming activites.  Francis Slocum's Great Great Grandsons, Chief Clarence Godfroy (and wife?)*, along with Great Great Grandson, Ross Bundy.

*I found a picture of Chief Clarence Godfroy and his wife in a book, and  thought the woman in the film was she.  I wanted to try to confirm this, and I can not locate the book ! J. Wine 2016.

6. MC2009/147d: BEST DVD created by videographer, David Sollenberger, from the original reel-to-reel film. Vivid Color. DVD in IIS Media Cabinet by accession number and copy located on archives network in folder titled [Historical Movies Media] and also searchable by accession number typed in this format: MC2009_147d.

7. MC2009/147e: Vivid color copy of reel-to-reel tape by David Sollenberger.  Movie was originally misidentified as 1938 May Day when in actuality it records 1941 May Day and Homecoming 1941.  Camp Mack Day (probably 1941 parade) and other events are recorded on this copy as well.

Bio History Note

MU2009/147a - May Day 1939 documents tumblers, Ferdinand the Bull {2.32}, a Maypole dance {2.49}, the May Day Queen {3.10}, her entourage, and parade. See page 113 of the 1940 Aurora for a description of this event. Graduation exercises 1939 [3.33}.

May Day 1941 event with the theme of Olde England.  See the 1942 Aurora for a description. The 1941 commencement is the last with Winger as president.  Each student holds a candle and approaches Winger on stage, who lights their candle from his own.   

Class Day Candle Lighting Ceremony - from the program: Following tradition, the seniors receivelight for their candles from President Winger, as a symbol of the truth andknowledge the college has given them. Commencement sequence that appears to be from 1941 when Schwalm was made President.  Schwalm and Winger both appear in the footage. This could also be Schwalm's inauguration.

Segment (for promotional purposes?) where a veiled young woman attends Manchester College commencement exercises with her mother, father and brother.  Their car pulls up next to the tennis courts and they exit the car and walk slowly to the building where the festivities take place.

{2:16} 1934 May Day parade with Queen of May and her court. {2:20} the Wenger twins, the 2nd and 3rd in line walking side by side, each with hair parted on viewer's right). {2:24} Pauline Holl, Carl Holl's step-sister, might be the woman in viewer's view walking in front of first male queen bearer and behind the woman who follows Wenger twins, and is framed in corner of shot in 2:26 and 2:27.

Carl Holl's son, Carl, believes that the videographer for these movies is Don Martin.  Don Martin was a Manchester grad who came back to teach under the influence of Carl Holl, Sr. Don was allowed to have a mustache because of an injury. He was opening a package with a sharp instrument when the instrument slipped and slit his upper lip.

VHS tape digitized by Manchester College Information Technology Services, Summer 2013.  Two of the DVDs were discarded because they would not play.

These VHS tapes were re-digitzed at the end of Summer 2013.  They can now be viewed as MP4 files on the Archives' Network drive [W].
