L.W. Shultz earned a B.A. from Manchester College in 1914.  He served also as Librarian, Principal of Preparatory Department,  and Professor in Mathematics, Religious Education, Academy, Modern Languages from 1924-1943.  He died in 1982.  During his lifetime he led Church of the Brethren tours throughout the United States and abroad.

Excerpts from an outline by L. W. Schultz, April 3, 1977:

(The Brethren Tours) began with two shiploads of heifers for the farmers of Poland taken in the years 1945-1946 and 1946-1947. Both ships,.....were delayed in Baltimore, the first by a dock strike and the second by a serious collision with an oil tanker in Chesapeake Bay.  Each of these delays would be a long story to tell.  In 1949 I decided to take people instead of cows to Europe.  I liked it much better.  You see on board ship or plane you do not need to feed and care for people.  The stewards and stewardesses do that.

During the years since 1949 it has been my pleasure to plan for tours and take 17 groups abroad on tours (six of these went on to the Holy Land).  In addition I have had one small and eight large groups on tours in the United States and Canada.  And once (in 1952) I went abroad all alone to secure material for my book on Schwarzenau, Where the Brethren Began in Europe.

November 8, 2006 is when these items were accessioned.  The objects were received prior to April 2006.
