Two students in Manchester University’s Pharmacy program have earned spots in a competitive, rigorous program designed to improve health in underserved communities throughout the state of Indiana.

Esther Adewunmi and Florence Umotoni were named to the Class of 2025 Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Scholars Program, a two-year program that is a part of a national initiative to prepare tomorrow’s health professionals to become leaders in interprofessional, transformative practice who serve those in areas of acute health care need.

Over the two-year program, AHEC Scholars complete didactic training opportunities and field experiences with a focus on rural and urban health care and caring for underserved populations. The competitive program is designed specifically for individuals who possess a strong drive to provide care to those living in rural and medically underserved communities across Indiana.

“We are incredibly proud of – and excited for – Esther and Florence and their participation in this outstanding program,” said Tommy Smith, dean of health sciences and pharmacy at Manchester University. “They both embody what makes Manchester’s approach to health sciences unique and important by ensuring today’s learners are well equipped to become tomorrow’s providers in communities across the country – especially in communities where their services are needed most.”

The AHEC Scholars Program’s field experiences emphasize the integration of eight core topics:

  • Behavioral Health Integration

  • Cultural Competency & Humility

  • Interprofessional Practice

  • Practice Transformation

  • Social Determinants of Health

  • Connecting Communities and Supporting Health Professionals

  • Virtual Learning and Telehealth

  • Current/Emerging Issues (COVID-19, Opioid Epidemic, and Maternal-Child Health)
