Manchester University hosted its first-ever NxtGen Leadership Camp for community youth on July 21-26.

Manchester University hosted its first-ever NxtGen Leadership Camp on July 21-26.

The NxtGen Program on Campus is a free Lilly Endowment, Inc.-funded initiative designed to help Indiana colleges and universities in their efforts to create new or expand and enhance existing high-quality, on-campus programs for community youth.

This program aims to increase opportunities for Indiana youth to participate in learning experiences on college campuses that will expose them to Indiana’s higher education institutions while also providing them with experiences that will help prepare them for success in college and beyond.

The camp was, and will continue to be, hosted at no cost to campers. A $250 stipend was provided to each participant to ease the financial burdens on the students and their families.

Dozens of local students, grades 9-12 from ten surrounding counties, attended this summer’s camp.

“I learned the type of skills that I have and how they will help me in team settings. I also learned more about the passions I have and how to apply them to my future career,” said Brooklyn, age 16. “It was really cool to meet new people and to have a roommate. I’ve never had to share a room with someone before, so it was fun!”

Campers attended faculty sessions each day, with topics ranging from nursing, to business, to English. Community sessions were led by Grow Wabash County, Questa and Gener8tor.

The afternoon spent at Camp Mack, a year-round camp affiliated with the Church of the Brethren, was a favorite experience of many campers. Nathan, age 16, said, “My favorite memory so far is definitely Camp Mack. It was really fun and a good time for everyone to bond. I would definitely return next year. It was a fun experience and I really enjoyed meeting new people.”
