Manchester University’s Model United Nations (UN) team took home five awards at the 2024 Model UN Conference held at Indiana University Kokomo on Nov. 14-16.
Manchester University’s Model United Nations (UN) team took home five awards at the 2024 Model UN Conference held at Indiana University Kokomo on Nov. 14-16.
Four MU delegates, out of 80 total students from five universities and one high school, earned awards for their performance at the conference.
Taylor Bennett, representing China, earned awards for Most Valuable Delegate and Top Negotiator in Council 2. She is a first-year studying political science.
Karmen Brown, representing the United States, earned the award for Best Advocate for National Interest in Council 5. She is a first-year studying history and political science.
Gus Stender, representing the United States, earned the award for Best Advocate for National Interest in Council 2. He is a junior studying business management, professional sales, and accounting.
Sam Hupp, representing the United States, earned the award for Best Advocate for National Interest in Council 1. He is a junior studying philosophy and peace studies.
“Gus and Sam are MUN veterans with multiple conferences and awards under their belt; Taylor and Karmen are new members and first-year students, and I'm in awe of their spectacular outcomes,” said Gabriela Ramalho, assistant professor of political science. “The other 11 members worked equally hard and did very well in the conference, participating fully and showcasing all their hard work. They are all excellent exemplars of Manchester students! We are already hard at work preparing for our Spring Model European Union conference coming up in April.”
Manchester is the first university in the United States to hold permanent observer status with the United Nations as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). This status gives Manchester representatives access to UN proceedings and, with permission, the opportunity to actively debate issues on the floor of the UN General Assembly. Andrew Cordier, who graduated from Manchester in 1922, was a key player in drafting the founding charter of the United Nations.
