Doctor on front lines in Palestinian-Israeli conflict to speak at MU

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – Manchester University welcomes Dr. Mads Gilbert as he talks about his experience as a “political doctor” in Gaza on Tuesday, Oct. 4. 

The “Night in Gaza” presentation by the author, activist and humanitarian will be offered at 7 p.m. in Cordier Auditorium at the North Manchester campus. This presentation is free and open to the public. 

Gilbert is a Norwegian doctor of emergency medicine who has worked in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza since the early 1980s. He was sent by the Norwegian Aid Committee to provide humanitarian assistance during the Israeli attacks in 2008 and again in 2014, during which 2,100 Palestinians, mostly civilians, were killed. 

In this presentation, Gilbert will discuss his experiences on the front lines of war, and he feels obligated to share the stories of its victims.   

Gilbert is currently the head of emergency medicine and professor at the Clinic of Emergency Medicine at the University Hospital of North Norway. He has written two books, Night in Gaza and Eye in Gaza.

Established in 1948, the Peace Studies Institute and Program in Conflict Resolution at Manchester University pioneered as the first undergraduate Peace Studies Program in the world. It is bringing Gilbert to the University as part of the Values, Ideas and the Arts series at MU.

The Manchester Peace Studies Institute sponsors public conferences and programs for the university and community on topics related to world peace and conflict resolution.
