Evans to be sentenced in fatal crash

Deangelo R. Evans, accused in the Feb. 21, 2016, crash that took the lives of three Manchester University students and badly injured another, pleaded guilty Sept. 19 in Grant County Superior Court 2.

He is scheduled to be sentenced at 9 a.m. Monday, April 3.

Evans pleaded guilty to all eight charges against him, including three counts each of reckless homicide and operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death and one count of OWI resulting in serious bodily injury.

Students Nerad Mangai, Brook “BK” Dagnew and Kirubel Hailu died in the crash.

Because it would be difficult for some affected to return for the sentencing, the judge allowed victim impact statements in court Sept. 19. More victim impact statements may be given in court on the day of sentencing, and letters may also have been submitted.

The sentencing has been postponed in the past, so it is possible the court could do so again.
