Manchester University student Genevive Skeans serves as infectious disease health care intern

Genivive SkeansManchester University student Genevive Skeans of Warsaw, Ind., is among a select group of students across the nation accepted into the Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty internship program.

The students are placed in an eight-week immersive internship to help strengthen impoverished areas or populations, mainly through education, health care, legal services, housing, social and economic needs, and community-building efforts.

Skeans, who will be a sophomore this fall and is majoring in biology-chemistry, with a minor in peace studies, is spending the summer as an assistant at Cone Health, Regional Center For Infectious Disease in Greensboro, N.Y.

While in her internship Skeans  assists in data collection, and observes patient exams and case management/social work evaluations. This includes assisting clinic staff in evaluating patient records to identify patients who are unable to stick to medication plans or who have no-show rates. This internship is designed to help those vulnerable to diseases and unstable mental health. It targets addicts and the homeless.

Manchester’s involvement in the consortium holds a direct connection to its mission: Manchester University respects the infinite worth of every individual and graduates persons of ability and conviction who draw upon their education and faith to lead principled, productive, and compassionate lives that improve the human condition.
