The 30th annual Friends of Manchester Golf Outing on June 14 raised $30,000 to support Spartan athletics.
Participation was up from the previous year, with about 80 golfers – 20 foursomes – who birdied and bogeyed their way to a great day with friends old and new.
“It’s difficult to articulate the importance and effect that the Friends of Manchester Golf Outing has at MU,” said Athletic Director Rick Espeset. “The event has been great for the school because it brings back alumni into all areas of the campus community.”
What started in 1990 with the vision of Manchester graduates Ken Metzger ’67 and Til ’47 and Dortha Martz ’47 King has become an annual celebration of Spartan competition and camaraderie, typically on the second Friday of June.
Recent events have been at the beautiful, but challenging, Bridgewater Golf Club in Auburn, Ind. Lunch, dinner and prizes are included.
All proceeds and competition support MU’s student-athletes by providing equipment, uniforms and improvements to facilities. This year, golf outing funds were used for improvements to the Brown Fitness Center, which is available to all students, faculty and staff. The outing has raised $1.3 million over its 30-year history.
