1940s
David “Dave” Lower ’41 of Wildomar, Calif., celebrated his 100th birthday in October. A World War II veteran and retired science teacher, Lower was featured in a local television news story.
1950s
Wendell Dilling ’58 has been a volunteer research advisor for chemistry students at Central Michigan University for the past 29 years. He was a research chemist at The Dow Chemical Co. for 30 years. Wendell recently won eight medals in the indoor Michigan Senior Olympics, including silver medals in the shot put, triple jump, 60-meter low hurdles, and 800-meter and 1500-meter runs in the men's 80-84 age division. He also won bronze medals in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes and 400-meter run, and he placed fourth in the long jump and 1500-meter power walk.
The Indiana Historical Society honored Shirley Ogle ’59 Willard as a Golden Hoosier in June 2019. She was recognized for her work to preserve the Potawatomi Trail of Death history and for her work with the Fulton County Historical Society. Shirley contacted all 26 counties on the 660-mile forced removal known as the Trail of Death and had historical markers placed at all the camp sites of the two-month trek. She also released a book in December, Fulton County, Indiana – The Luckiest County in the World.

Larry Smucker ’63 of Lakeland, Fla., was awarded the Nancy Thornberry Outstanding Volunteer Award for the Polk Senior Games.
Ruthann Knechel ’64 Johansen of Granger, Ind., co-authored with E. Jane Doering When Fiction and Philosophy Meet: A Conversation with Flannery O'Connor and Simone Weil, published by Mercer University Press.
Réné Calderón ’66 and Karen Gorden ’71 Calderón celebrated 53 years of marriage. Réné also received the Revelation 7:9 Award from the Intercultural Ministries Advisory Council of the Church of the Brethren.
Curt Keim ’67 of Green Valley, Ariz., is board vice president and chief grant writer for the Sahuarita Food Bank and Community Resource Center. The retired dean of Moravian College, Keim was featured recently in the Green Valley News.
Michael “Doc” Emrick ’68 of St. Clair, Mich., was inducted into the National Sports Media Association’s Hall of Fame.
1970s
Alan L. Flory '70 and Barbara J. Clark ’73 Flory of Apple Valley, Calif., celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Dec. 20, 2019. The Florys met at Manchester and married in the old North Manchester Church of The Brethren.
Karen Horn ’71 has published her book, Why Talk is Cheap: Employee Engagement and the Bottom Line. It is available through Amazon and other booksellers.
Richard Gregg ’72 and Sheila Paul ’74c Gregg, who met as students at Manchester, along with their daughters, Brooke Gregg ’02 Hughes and Ashley Gregg ’07 Vice were featured in The News Sun of Howe, Ind., for their long careers in education. Collectively, the Gregg family has spent more than 100 years as educators. Now retired, Richard and Sheila live near Howe. Brooke is a counselor for the Northwest Allen (County) School District and Ashley is dean of students at Central Noble Jr./Sr. High School in Albion, Ind.
Lisa Bok ’75 Hatcher was elected president of the Indiana State Medical Association. She works as a family medicine practitioner in Columbia City, Ind.
Kay Evans ’75, daughter of Helen Brubaker ’44 and T. Quentin Evans,’45, married Gary Olund on July 27, 2019, at their home in Porter Beach, Ind. Kay retired in September 2018 after a 40-year leadership career in higher education, health care and human services development.
Mark Huntington ’76 of North Manchester, dean for natural and health sciences in the College of Pharmacy, Natural and Health Sciences and professor of exercise and athletic training, retired at the end of this academic year. Mark joined the faculty in 1984 and was instrumental in founding athletic training education at Manchester. Under his leadership, athletic training at MU earned accreditation and became a master’s degree program.
Julie Garber ’79, program director for the Community Foundation of Wabash County, received the Indiana Early Learning Champion Award for her work to establish and grow high-quality opportunities in early childhood education.
Sarah Kurtz ’79 of Merced, Calif., was elected to the National Academy of Engineering for her contributions to the gallium indium phosphide/gallium arsenide photovoltaic cells and for her leadership in solar-cell reliability and quality.
1980s
Steve Naragon ’82 of North Manchester, professor of philosophy at Manchester, retired at the end of this academic year. Naragon majored in philosophy as an undergraduate and earned his Ph.D. at the University of Notre Dame in 1987. On the faculty at MU since 1991, Naragon specialized in modern philosophy with an emphasis on Immanuel Kant and German philosophy. He was a Fulbright Scholar in 2007.
Celia Cook-Huffman '86 became the vice president for academic affairs at Manchester University on March 23. She has been at Juniata College since 1990, serving as the associate director of the Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies until 2015, when she became Juniata's assistant provost. Celia earned her master's degree from Notre Dame's Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies and her Ph.D. from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University.

Jared Sponseller ’96 was promoted to senior vice president and chief financial officer of First State Bank in Middlebury, Ind.

Andy Williams ’10, a former Manchester University cross country and track student-athlete standout, earned a spot in the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for the marathon event.
Andrew Durham ’11 was named 2019 Center Township Employee of the Year. He serves as comptroller at the Center Township Trustee’s Office in Kokomo, Ind.
Cambria Teter ’11 Kolter married Ryan Kolter on Dec. 15, 2019.
Jason Ray ’11 and his wife, Elizabeth, welcomed their daughter, Tegan Drew, on Feb. 21, 2020. Delivering Tegan was Dr. Erin Cole ’11, a close friend and roommate of Jason’s their senior year at Manchester. Jason is an attorney in Union County, Ind., where he serves as chief deputy prosecutor.

Benjamin Tapper ’12 is the associate for resource consulting at the Center for Congregations in Indianapolis. In January, he facilitated a panel discussion commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Ind. Ben holds master’s degrees from Indiana University and Christian Theological Seminary.
Justin Weber ’12 and his wife, Kelsie, of Laotto, Ind., welcomed their daughter, Nora Mae.
Matthew Helm ’13 graduated from Indiana University with his Ph.D. in genome, cell and developmental biology in May 2019. He is employed with the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service in West Lafayette, Ind.
Jeremiah Sanders ’14 was awarded first place in the 2019 Opera Ebony Benjamin Matthews Vocal Competition. A baritone, Jeremiah earned a master’s degree in vocal performance from Butler University.

Breegan Andersen ’15 is an ecologist coordinator for the Arkansas Department of Agriculture in Little Rock, Ark. She holds master’s degrees in public affairs and environmental science from Indiana University.
Michael Love ’15 and Tiffany Clark ’16 Love were married on October 5, 2019, with numerous MU friends attending. The couple would not have met were it not for Manchester, wrote Tiffany. “We loved our time at MU.”
Claire Miller ’16 McNamara married Colin McNamara on Aug. 31, 2019, in Granger, Ind. She is an admissions counselor at Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Ind.
Nick Baker ’18 of Carmel, Ind., has earned his master’s degree in sports informatics at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis. He completed his master’s degree consultancy project last summer with the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis, analyzing basketball shot location data. He now does contract work for the NCAA’s rules enforcement division.
David Alvarez ’19 is student life/membership coordinator for the Unity Performing Arts Foundation. The foundation supports the Voices of Unity Youth Choir in Fort Wayne.
