‘Everything’ she has learned at Manchester helps her
“The idea of making the world a better place inspires me, and what motivates me is the fact that I could make an impact on making that happen, no matter how small,” says Kendall Brown, a senior from Tecumseh, Mich. Kendall is majoring in peace studies and Spanish, and minoring in religion and TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages).
On campus, Kendall is the president of the Kenapocomoco Peace Coalition and a member of the Manchester Symphony Orchestra and MU Symphonic Band. She also is part of the Honors Program, chairs the Honors Leadership Council and serves on the Undergraduate Honors Committee. She currently works on campus for the peace studies program. In the past, Kendall worked as a Phonathon caller and Student Orientation Leader, and was a member of MU’s marching band.
“I chose Manchester because I loved the community feeling and the small size and because my aunt attended Manchester,” said Kendall. “I chose to study peace studies because I was interested in nonviolence and different tactics we can use to promote and achieve nonviolence, and I chose Spanish because I love learning the language,” said Kendall. “I also hope to work with immigrants, and want to be able to connect with others on a deeper level through language.”
This year, Kendall is working on her honors thesis to graduate from Manchester with an Honors and Achievement designation. She also will travel to Georgia in January with the Peace Studies Program.
After graduation in May 2022, Kendall plans to join the Brethren Volunteer Service to help communities around the world. Ideally, she would love a placement where she can use her TESOL minor and teach English. “Honestly, everything I have learned at Manchester will help me in the future. I love and will carry with me the sense of community I feel at Manchester. I will take conflict resolution and mediation skills I have learned with me into the future.”
Adds Kendall, “The different perspectives I have heard at Manchester will also allow me to view situations in a different light. I now have connections with fantastic faculty that have already helped me a great amount, and I am sure they will continue to help me in my future endeavors.”
