Posted July 23 - Seth Mayer, assistant professor of philosophy, presented research at two conferences in July. At the Society for Philosophy in the Contemporary World conference at Portland State University in Oregon, he gave a paper on philosophical issues related to criminal justice reform.  At the International Social Philosophy Conference at Oakland University in Michigan, he delivered comments on a recent philosophy book about transitional justice.

Posted June 18 - Mary Lahman, professor of communication studies, is attending the International Listening Association convention in Dublin, Ireland, this week. She and listening scholar Laura Janusik will present their research on the use of metacognitive pedagogical sequence for improved student learning. Assistant Professor Tim McKenna-Buchanan led data collection efforts at MU, connecting with colleagues Michelle Calka, Judd Case, Ryan Hedstrom and Kristen Short.

Lahman also will participate on a panel discussing Best Practices for Teaching Listening, highlighting a listening course in the sales curriculum. In addition, she will discuss how communication studies faculty members are revising their textbook, Communication Across Context: A Listening-Centered Approach.

Lahman chairs the ILA Education Committee and is planning next year’s ILA pre-conference workshop for teachers.

Posted June 11 - The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette on June 8 published an opinion column by Sreenath Majumder, associate professor and chair of the Department of Economics at Manchester University. In “The Tribe Over the Truth,” Majumder, a native of Calcutta, India, warns of the dangers of tribalism in American politics.

Posted May 22 - Tim Reed, associate professor of music, has had a musical composition selected for the 18^th World Saxophone Congress to be held in Zagreb, Croatia, July 10-14, 2018.  Reed’s composition, a chamber work called Red Forest Suite, was composed for Farrell Vernon, associate professor of saxophone and jazz studies at IPFW. Vernon will perform the work from 1:15 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 11 in the Academy of Music’s Huml Hall in Zagreb.  Read more about the conference here.

Posted May 3 - Scott Humphries, assistant professor of music, is a “featured composer” for MSB Publishing, publisher of more than 400 musical arrangements for concert band, string orchestra, chorus and soloist. Humphries earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from James Madison University and a Master of Arts from Virginia Tech University. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at Boston University. Read more.

Posted April 26 - Four Manchester students have been chosen as MU’s first Shepherd summer interns through MU’s membership in the Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty. The students and their placements are: Daisy Byers, New American Pathways, Atlanta, Ga.; Virginia Rendler, Career Collaborative, Boston, Mass.; MacKenzie Weadick, YWCA volunteer and training, Austin, Texas; and Caraline Feairheller, Ketuckians for the Commonwealth, Louisville, Ky.

The internships begin June 7 at Marymount University in Arlington, Va., where more than 150 Shepherd interns will meet for an opening conference. The eight-week placements will end Aug. 3 at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio for a closing symposium.

Posted April 19 - Sun Kang, assistant professor of sport management, has co-authored an article in the International Journal of Sports Marketing and Sponsorship, and co-authored a chapter in Governance and Policy in Sport Organizations. He also will present at a conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in June. 

Posted April 16 - Will Patch, MU’s digital strategist, is co-curating an open resource for terminology and professional development resources for enrollment management. The #EMchat Reference Book — which includes industry terminology, as well as links to relevant news sources, podcasts, listservs, and newsletters — is a project developed by EMchat, an online community of higher education enrollment management professionals. The project has garnered coverage from the National Association for College Admissions Counseling, the largest professional organization for admissions. Read more.
