Associate Professor Jeff Beer has been appointed chair of the Education Committee of the Indiana Athletic Trainers Association (IATA), headquartered in Indianapolis. The Education Committee coordinates the planning of summer and fall symposiums each year, and awards scholarships and research grants. The IATA advances the profession of athletic training through advocacy, education, networking and resources. Jeff is chair of MU’s Exercise Science and Athletic Training Department and serves as undergraduate program director.

Jenifer Lee, a junior from Rockville, Ind., has had her case study accepted by the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association, a district organization for athletic training. Lee’s study, a poster presentation titled “Effects of Tarsal Coalition on a Female Basketball Player: A Case Study,” will be showcased at the annual GLATA meeting in March in Chicago. “This is the first poster submitted and accepted by GLATA for MU since I have been at the University,” said Associate Professor Jeff Beer, chair of the Exercise Science and Athletic Training Department. “This is a great honor to have her represent our program and school at this event.”

A research paper on inequality in economics and political science has landed three Manchester University faculty members in a book.

Leonard Williams, dean of the College of Education and Social Sciences, and co-authors John Deal, associate professor, and Matt Hendryx, visiting instructor, presented “Rediscovery Inequality: From Bush to Piketty” in November 2014 to a conference on “Capitalism & Socialism: Utopianism, Globalization, and Revolution.” It was subsequently reviewed and accepted as a chapter in A New Social Question: Capitalism, Socialism and Utopia, which has just been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing.

The book is edited by Casey Harison, a history professor at the University of Southern Indiana.

Three Manchester University musicians have been selected to play in the 2016 Indiana Collegiate Band. Percussionist MacKenzi Lowry ’16, euphonium player Kevin Friermood ’16 and horn player Laura Dickey ’18 will perform Jan. 14-16 at the Indiana Music Educators Association Conference in Fort Wayne. They’ll be performing pieces from various composers under the direction of University of Michigan Director of Bands and Professor Emeritus H. Robert Reynolds. Other Indiana schools represented in the Indiana Collegiate Band include Indiana, Notre Dame and Ball State.

 

Aron Costello-Harris, assistant professor of biology, had an article published in a recent issue of Ethology  Ecology and Evolution. “Investigation of female house mice (Mus musculus domesticus) by males in relation to the presence and absence of anogenital odors from dominant or subordinate males” was published in the October 2015 issue of the journal.

 

Zach Dougal, assistant professor of exercise science and athletic training, has been nominated for the "Forty under 40" award from Fort Wayne Business Weekly magazine forhis work in educating the public about concussions. 

Steve Naragon, professor of philosophy, has 19 entries in a recently published German reference work on philosopher Immanuel Kant (Kant-Lexikon, edited by Marcus Willaschek, et al., 3 vols., Berlin/Boston: Walter de Gruyter, 2015). In translation, Steve’s articles are on the concepts 'automaton', 'touch', 'brain', 'hearing', 'smell', 'skin', 'heart', 'body', 'machine', 'nerves', 'physiognomy', 'physiology', 'sound', 'vision', 'deafness', 'sensory deception', and 'technicism',  as well as entries on an essay by Kant (“On the Organ of the Soul”) and on the contemporary anatomist Samuel Thomas Sömmering.

Manchester University accounted for 15 of the 69 pieces selected by judges for the 92 County Art Show at the Clark Gallery of the Honeywell Center. That’s MU’s largest share in the history of the show, according to Jena Oke, associate professor of art. The awards reception is at 7 p.m., Feb. 22.

Associate Professor Dave Hicks, chair of the Niswander Department of Biology, published an article in the latest issue of the Proceedings of the Indiana Academy of Science.  “Plasticity of Aesculus Glabra (Hippocastanaceae) Leaf Traits Along Small-Scale Light Gradients Within Forest Stands” appears in Vol. 124, No. 1 of Proceedings.

Özlem Ersin, associate professor and assistant department chair of pharmaceutical sciences, has been appointed chair of the program committee – Medical Care Section of the American Public Health Association. In this capacity, she will lead planning work for the scientific content at the organization’s annual meeting, which is in Denver this year. Ersin is currently a governing councilor of the same organization.
