Frances Smith Thomas, class of 1939, was a musician, educator, and friend of the Martin Luther King, Jr. family. Coretta Scott King and daughter Yolanda King were among those who spoke in honor of Frances at a memorial service held in Petersime Chapel on the Manchester University campus on March 13, 1999.
Frances and her husband worked at the high school where Coretta was a student. Frances helped inspire Coretta to attend college and bought her the outfit she would eventually wear on her first date with King. Frances and Coretta touched each other's lives through friendship and through music.
Listen to Coretta and Yolanda share warm vignettes in honor of their friend.
