Everybody's Talking: Manchester's "the best"
for service, workplace and college guides
Everyone is talking! Manchester is “a great place to work,” says The Chronicle of Higher Education, we’re a “Best College” in the leading guides for college-bound students and The Washington Post put Manchester on Page One news for its savvy about three-year bachelor’s degrees. (We call it Fast Forward.)
Faculty and staff members told The Chronicle of Higher Education they love the Manchester community. “If you love teaching, this is the best place you can possibly teach,” said John Deal, assistant professor of economics. Praise from Deal and other faculty and staff members helped convince The Chronicle to place Manchester on its “Honor Roll of 2011 Great Colleges to Work For.”
The Honor Roll is based on a survey of nearly 44,000 employees at 310 colleges and universities. Only 42 of The Chronicle’s 2011 Great Colleges made the Honor Roll. Manchester receives high marks from its faculty and staff in six areas. Read the news release.
The College was front and center in a 9/11 special edition video compilation of “My Three Words” for ABC’s Good Morning America on Saturday, Sept. 10. Peace Studies students coordinated a gathering around the College sign to display our “three-word” signs and shout out “WORK FOR PEACE!” and “RAIN OR SHINE!” for the video recorder, who was perched atop a ladder in the pouring rain. President Jo Young ’69 Switzer wrote an opinion piece about our demonstration and working for peace that will appear in The Journal Gazette (Fort Wayne) newspaper on Sept. 18. Financial aid packages and relevant academic experiences make Manchester College a 2012 Great School at a Great Price, say students and U.S. News & World Report. The leading guide for college-bound students and families ranks Manchester 4th in the Midwest for Best Value.
Political science major Ian Hoover ’13 agrees: “I was able to get more financial aid from Manchester than a state school,” says the Huntington, Ind., resident who transferred from IPFW. He also found a passion for law through participation in Mock Trial, student government and faculty mentoring. “My liberal arts education is really starting to connect with me now,” says Hoover. “In class discussions, you can pull from all the classes and tools you have.” Read the news release.
The College also received “Best in the Midwest” honors from The Princeton Review. “Professors are really passionate about what they teach," students told the popular college guide, which praises Manchester’s “excellent academic programs.” Read the news release.
A Google search will turn up lots of media attention over the summer, but the most exciting might be the Page One coverage of the College’s Fast Forward three-year degree program in The Washington Post. Manchester students Katie Miller ’12 and Mercedes Plummer ’11, and Executive Vice President Dave McFadden ’82 were quoted and the June 16 story included campus photos.
While the story focuses on the sluggishness of three-year degrees, the Manchester College references are excellent examples of why our students drop out of Fast Forward: Because they’ve found so much more they want to do, they need the extra semester or year. Read the story. |
