Evans pleads guilty in fatal crash 

Deangelo R. Evans, 27, accused in the Feb. 21 crash that took the lives of three Manchester University students and badly injured another, pleaded guilty on Sept. 19 in Grant County Superior Court II to all eight charges against him, including three counts each of reckless homicide and operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death and one count of OWI resulting in serious bodily injury.

Students Nerad Mangai, Brook “BK” Dagnew and Kirubel Hailu died in the crash.

Because it would be difficult for some victims to return for the sentencing next month, the judge allowed four victim impact statements in court Monday. Israel Tamire, who was injured in the crash, and family members of those killed took the stand.

More victim impact statements may be given in court on the day of sentencing, and letters may also be submitted.
Evans’ sentencing has been rescheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, April 3.

 “This guilty plea to all counts represents an important stage in the healing process for the families of Nerad, Brook and Kirubel, and for the entire MU community,” said Dave McFadden, Manchester University president.
