Senior takes advantage of internship opportunities
If it’s true that internships help college students find meaningful employment after graduation, Peter Bauson ’15 might have his choice of jobs when he leaves Manchester.
In his fourth year, the environmental studies and biology major from Kokomo, Ind., has already completed three internships.
Through his work as an intern at the Freshwater Mollusk Conservation Center at Virginia Tech University, as a dam removal intern on the Eel River, and as an intern with the Forest Service in Chugach National Forest, Ala., Peter has gained valuable experience that will prepare him for many careers upon graduation.
His diverse body of work ranges from culturing and propagating endangered species of mollusks across Virginia and Tennessee to removing and evaluating dams in northeast Indiana.
Peter also has taken advantage of study abroad opportunities at Manchester. He has examined the sustainability of aquaculture in Zambia and has participated in the Medical Practicum in Nicaragua. “It was humbling,” to live like the villagers they were serving, Peter reflects. Working side-by-side with the medical professionals was a great experience, too. “They didn’t just give us medical advice, but life advice as well. It was like a little family.”
Peter thanks the passionate Manchester faculty and staff for all their help. “My ability to secure these internships is a reflection of their dedication,” he says. He is grateful in other respects, too. “Cost was a big factor in my college decision,” he says, “and because of the generous scholarships from Manchester, I am able to continue my education here.”
Manchester prepares its students to succeed through rich experiences and lifelong connections.
Peter is embracing the experiences and making those connections.
“I feel prepared,” Peter says. “I feel qualified and confident that I’ll be competent in my field of study.”
