Spartan football pays tribute to former greats at Homecoming
Football players who reunite next month will relive a sweet Homecoming victory: when a fourth-quarter extra point gave a trailing Manchester a 7-6 victory over …. Ball State.
It was Oct. 19, 1940. Especially sweet: It was Homecoming!
Gridiron alumni young and seasoned will gather for a Football Reunion during Homecoming 2012 weekend, Oct. 12-13. They’ll also watch a slow-motion video of that Spartan triumph over Ball State.
Events include a Friday night reception and banquet at the Hilton Garden Inn at U.S. 24 and Interstate 69 in southwest Fort Wayne. Spartan offensive lineman Ray Hedstrom ’69 is master of ceremonies, with speeches by former players and current Head Coach Shannon Griffith. Another highlight of the evening: a video, produced for the banquet and reunion weekend.
Football alumni will have opportunity to meet current Spartans at their Friday afternoon practice and will take the field themselves Saturday at halftime during the 2012 Homecoming game against Bluffton University of Ohio.
Saturday morning is the MU Athletic Hall of Fame reception and award ceremony. The 2012 football inductee is receiver and captain Rick Mann ’89. Click here for more about the 2012 Athletic Hall of Fame.
The football reunion is focused on team members from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, but all are welcome. Click here or visit the MU home page at www.manchester,.edu for the full Homecoming 2012 schedule and to sign up for the Friday evening reception and dinner as well as the Athletic Hall of Fame luncheon on Saturday. To reserve a room at the banquet site, call 260-435-1777 and request group code MCFR for check-in Oct. 12.
