Background and Purpose

KAPPA MU EPSILON (KME) is the national undergraduate mathematics honor society. The national KME honor society was founded in 1931 to promote an interest in mathematics among undergraduate students. Its chapters are located in colleges and universities of recognized standing that offer a strong mathematics major. The chapters' members are selected from students of mathematics and other fields who have maintained standards of scholarship, have professional merit, and have attained academic distinction.

Manchester University Chapter

The Indiana Alpha chapter (the first chapter located in Indiana) was founded at Manchester University in 1950. Each year, students who meet specific academic qualifications are invited to join. Inductions take place at the departmental banquet, held in April or May. Inductees are guests of the department at the banquet. An initiation fee of $20 is payable to the national KME office. New members receive a complementary, two-year subscription to the KME Journal, The Pentagon.

Qualifications

Students in any major who meet all the following qualifications are invited to join:

• Completion of three university semesters
• Rank in the top 35 percent of one's class
• B average or higher in at least three mathematics and selected computer science courses at, or above, the level of Calculus I and Programming II.
